Nothing’s sound has always run the gamut from glistening piano ballads to scorching fuzz firebombs, but this nine-song opus includes the most achingly pretty and cataclysmically insane songs they’ve ever created. Palermo wrote and co-produced the record in close collaboration with Whirr guitarist Nicholas Bassett, a longtime songwriting partner whose expertise helped elevate A Short History of Decay to a tier of sonic grandeur that Nothing had never previously achieved.
“Nobody understands what I want to do better than Nick,” Palermo emphasises.
With additional production and mixing work from Sonny Diperri (DIIV, Julie) and every other Nothing member fine-tuning their parts, A Short History of Decay resulted in the most evolved musical statement in Nothing’s catalog. “Cannibal World” and “Toothless Coal” build upon the mechanised industrial-gaze of The Great Dismal standout “Say Less.” Clobbering breakbeats -- constructed with Jones’ own drum loops -- rattle like artillery fire, while miasms of distorted guitar howl into the ether like chainsaw symphonies. It’s the most My Bloody Valentine they’ve ever sounded, but in a way that still feels unequivocally Nothing.
On the other end of the spectrum, the ornately morose “Purple Strings” boasts a beautiful string arrangement that includes harpist -- and two-time Nothing contributor -- Mary Lattimore. That baroque delicacy permeates other A Short History of Decay highlights, particularly “The Rain Don’t Care,” a lilting ballad that channels the worn-down elegance of Mojave 3, and also “Nerve Scales,” a pattering bop that resembles Radiohead in its marriage of otherworldly atmosphere and mortal precision. “Never Come Never Morning” even contains a majestic brass section courtesy of Jesus Ricardo Ayub Chavira, an authentic Corridos musician who Nothing became acquainted with during a long night of partying at Sonic Ranch, the legendary Texas studio where Nothing recorded A Short History of Decay.
Located on a 1,700-acre pecan orchard just two hours from the Mexican border, Sonic Ranch provided a surreal backdrop for Nothing’s usual itinerary of heavy drinking and thrill-seeking antics. “We were drinking like it was the apocalypse every night -- and all day I guess, pretty much,” Palermo says, laughing. Tony Rancich, the eccentric billionaire who owns the studio compound, was an enigmatic presence during the two-week recording process. Palermo says Rancich always had a personal book of spells on hand, and would jog around the studio premises with a 357 magnum strapped to his chest to fend off wild dogs. He allegedly holds the record for the most speeding tickets in Texas, and one night during their marathon bender, he took the Nothing boys on a death-defying 160mph cruise down a desert highway.
Clearly, despite all of Palermo’s reckonings with age and deterioration, Nothing’s rebellious spirit remains intact. Even though, in so many ways, from the personnel changeovers to their advanced sound, Nothing are a vastly different band than they were when they started, Palermo still feels that A Short History of Decay is an uncannily familiar reflection of Nothing’s briney 2014 debut.
“Between the point of clarity and this overwhelming sense of honesty within myself,” Palermo explains. “This feels like an exact full circle moment to that first record.”
He calls the new record “a final chapter.” Not the end of Nothing, but the conclusion of a story that began with Guilty of Everything -- another album about time, regret, and confronting uncomfortable truths -- and now resolves with A Short History of Decay. The twelve tunes here open uncanny depths of expression as Bill continues to blaze one of the most original songwriting-and-performance trails out there. With My Days of 58, he applies the living, breathing energies of his live shows to the studio process, sharpening his slice-of-life portraiture to cut deeper than ever before.
The core musicians featured on My Days of 58 is the group that toured for 2022’s REALITY: guitarist Matt Kinsey, saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi and drummer Jim White, whose synergy was evident in 2024’s live Resuscitate!. This showed Bill, as he puts it, “that they could handle anything I threw at them,” adding:
“Improv/unpredictability/the unknown is the thing that keeps me motivated to keep making music. It’s all about listening to yourself and others. A lot of the best parts of a recording are the mistakes—making them into strengths, using them as springboards into something human.”
With this in mind, Bill prepared the songs with each player separately. Taking a note from songwriter, fan and friend Jerry DeCicca, he recorded the basic tracks for all but one song in a duo with Jim White. Meanwhile, he rehearsed with Matt, guitar to guitar, while asking Dustin to make horn charts for a few songs. Bill:
“I usually just sing a melody to a horn player or let them try a few takes and go from there. This time I thought, why not get some of the record charted out. There’s always room for spontaneity on top of that. And we did indeed throw some off the cuff stuff on top of the charted horns in a couple cases where they weren’t fully doing what I wanted.
With this record I kept thinking of it as a ‘living room record.’ I’m not talking about fidelity at all here. Living room attitude. Living room vibe. Not too loud, not otherworldly. I asked for the horns to be relaxed like someone on the couch playing, not a blast from heaven or hell.”
For more spontaneity and human colour, Bill called up several other players: Richard Bowden on fiddle, whom he’d seen playing with Terry Allen and loved; pianist Pat Thrasher; bassist Chris Vreeland; and trombonist Mike St. Clair. About pedal steel player Bill McCullough, who he knew from Knife in the Water, Bill says this:
“He has a real abstract approach to an abstract instrument—he’s a photographer (shot the front and back cover) and sees the steel in the same way as apertures and f-stops—foreground and midground and background—blurry and sharp. That’s how I’ve always seen the steel so it’s exciting to share that.
But hobo stew is always the idea—throwing together who I have at hand instead of following a recipe. I’m always learning. I know very little after all these years. I go by gut mostly, but sometimes forget all the possible considerations to consider.
The goal of every record at the recording part of the process is to get thrown out of Eden. Every session starts in Eden but you have to get out of there at some point.”

“Yeah Yeah Yeah just arrived out of the blue. There was a window of opportunity- youth was free, the studio was free, and the band were free- and I thought, let providence prevail. No one had heard the songs apart from myself and Alan McGee, but we both thought that we had something. You could feel it, even though none of the songs were really finished, and so we decided to roll with it and go and record them. I think with Yeah Yeah Yeah it was more than just trying to capture a vibe- it was about trying to record something majestic, which is how youth describes the record. There are gospels and strings on tracks like Free Love and don’t look away, which have kind of turned into these massive anthems. It has P.P. Arnold as a featured vocalist on a couple of tracks- the first, the single poison vine, which has a groove and a blistering chorus. She’s also on another song that’s a psychedelic funk track: the way it’s gotta be (oh yeah). Songs like Teardrops or Birds Heading South- we’ve tried to capture that classic, slightly
Wistful theme- whereas the weight of the world just rocks out. There’s also a little acoustic track to break it all up called the devil and the deep, which is a favourite of mine. After 2016’s stunning Masterpiece, Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo. The album jumps right into lives marked up and nipped in surprisingly swift fashion. They are peopled and unpeopled, spooked and soothed, regenerating back into a state where they can once again be vulnerable. Lenker’s songs introduce us to a gallery of multifaceted women and deal with the complicated matters of identity — at once dangerous and curious, though never unbelievable. Lenker shows us the gentle side of being ripped open. Tricked into love, done in and then witnessing the second act of pulling oneself back together to prepare for it to all happen again, but this time to a sturdier soul, one who is going to take the punches better than ever before and deal some jabs and roundhouses of their own. The album is thick with raw, un-doctored beauty: most of the songs on Capacity were played for the rest time in the studio and were recorded the same day. “There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album,” Lenker explains. “The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a reaction from inside the pain, whereas I feel Capacity examines the pain from the outside.”

Xs pressed on 140g black vinyl, housed in a gatefold jacket printed on silver foil board. Contains exclusive lyric and photo book. Cigarettes After Sex finally takes center stage as not just one of today’s preeminent indie bands, but as one of the most globally accomplished acts across any genre, whose often unconventional path to superstardom has helped reshape the very definition of success for artists in the modern era. Filled with raw, imagistic, sometimes smutty vignettes set to entrancing, slowburn pop songs, bandleader Greg Gonzalez captures every emotion a romantic arc inspires. But where previous albums have drawn from an amalgam of relationships, for the most part, X’s centralizes on just one relationship that spanned four years. “The record feels brutal,” admits Gonzalez. “I could sit and talk about this loss to someone, but that wouldn’t scratch the surface. I have to really write about it, sing about it, have the music, and then I can start to analyze and learn from it. Or just relive it—in a good way. I don’t have that Eternal Sunshine-thing of wanting to forget.” While continuing to observe classic pop song structures, Gonzalez has moved away from the prior sonic touchstones of the ’50s and ’60s, finding himself now drawn to a ’70s/’80s slow dance. As the title suggests, the record builds on last year’s SABLE EP, bringing together those four previously released tracks with eight new ones to form an impressive whole. The band first rose to prominence with 2007’s For Emma, Forever Ago, a raw, emotionally charged indie-folk debut that earned widespread acclaim. This was followed by the expansive, genre-blending Bon Iver (2011), and then the more sonically adventurous 22, A Million (2016) and i,i (2019), which pushed the boundaries of their folk roots with fragmented structures, electronic textures, and experimental production. While stunning in execution, those records often demanded deeper listening and a patient ear.

With SABLE, fABLE, Bon Iver offers something of a return to the emotional clarity of their earlier work—particularly in the SABLE portion. These tracks lean into the band’s folk foundations, carrying the bare, vulnerable intimacy that defined their breakthrough sound. Songs like Things Behind Things Behind Things, S P E Y S I D E, and Awards Season stand out as some of Vernon’s most affecting singer-songwriter work to date. If SABLE is rooted in folk tradition, fABLE finds its footing in a middle ground between that intimacy and the experimental spirit of 22, A Million and i,i. More accessible than its two immediate predecessors, fABLE strikes a thoughtful balance that pairs emotional depth with innovative composition. Everything Is Peaceful Love is a standout and one of the most upbeat and joyous songs the band has ever released, it showcases Vernon’s signature falsetto at its sweetest, channeling a contemporary take on soul.

And soul runs deep through fABLE. There’s a special, devotional energy in the album’s strongest moments. Walk Home rides a slow funk rhythm, layering Vernon’s smooth vocals with warped, electronically manipulated harmonies that lend the track an off-kilter edge. Dijon guests on Day One, a deconstructed soul workout that feels both sacred and twisted, which along with From recalls the influence of artists like MK Gee, whose 2024 album Two Star and The Dream Police seems to be a significant inspiration. Other highlights include the spare, spacious R&B of I’ll Be There and the melancholic, dreamy If Only I Could Wait, featuring Danielle Haim. But perhaps the album’s most moving moment comes with its penultimate track, There’s A Rhythmn, a slow, contemplative piece that places Vernon’s voice close and reassuring in the mix, surrounded by jazzy textures and gentle pedal steel.

In many ways, SABLE, fABLE is a return to the Bon Iver we first fell in love with. Music that is emotionally raw, deeply felt, and just the right side of earnest. But it’s also something more, a subtle concept album and mood piece that reflects Vernon’s evolution as a songwriter, one whose gift for melody and unmatched vocal delivery continues to shine, now tempered by a decade of bold experimentation. It was released on March 3, 1989, by Tommy Boy. It marked the first of three full-length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. Critically, as well as commercially, the album was a success. It contains the singles, Me Myself and I, The Magic Number, Buddy, and Eye Know. The album title came from the Johnny Cash song Five Feet High and Rising. It is listed on Rolling Stone’s 200 Essential Rock Records and The Source’s 100 Best Rap Albums (both of which are unordered). When Village Voice held its annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll for 1989, 3 Feet High and Rising was ranked at No.1, outdistancing its nearest opponent (Neil Youngs Freedom) by 21 votes and 260 points. It was also listed on the Rolling Stone’s The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Released amid the 1989 boom in gangsta rap, which gravitated towards hardcore, confrontational, violent lyrics, De La Souls uniquely positive style made them an oddity beginning with the first single, Me, Myself and I. Their positivity meant many observers labeled them a hippie group, based on their declaration of the D.A.I.S.Y. Age (da inner sound, yall). Sampling artists as diverse as Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and The Turtles, 3 Feet High and Rising is often viewed as the stylistic beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop (and especially jazz rap). Paul hadn’t planned to release an album in 2020, but in the isolation of “Rockdown,” he soon found himself fleshing out some existing musical sketches and creating even more new ones. Before long an eclectic collection of spontaneous songs would become McCartney III: a stripped-back, self-produced and, quite literally, solo work marking the opening of a new decade, in the tradition of 1970’s McCartneyand 1980’s McCartney II. Recorded earlier this year in Sussex (UK), McCartney IIIis mostly built from live takes of Paul on vocals and guitar or piano, overdubbing his bass playing, drumming, etc. atop that foundation. McCartney IIIspans a vast and intimate range of modes and moods, from soul-searching to wistful, from playful to raucous and all points between —captured with some of the same gear from Paul’s Rude Studio used as far back as 1971 Wings sessions. And Pauls array of vintage instruments he played on the new album have an even more storied history, including Bill Black ofElvis Presleys original trios double bass alongside Pauls own iconic Hofner violin bass, and a mellotron from Abbey Road Studios used on Beatles recordings, to name but a few. Just as McCartney’s 1970 release marked Paul’s return to basics in the wake of the biggest band break-up in musical history, and the 1980 avant-garde masterpiece McCartney II rose from the ashes of Wings, McCartney III finds Paul back on his own, turning unexpected circumstances into a personal snapshot of a timeless artist at a unique point in history. 1 Long Tailed Winter Bird 5:16 2 Find My Way 3:54 3 Pretty Boys 3:00 4 Women And Wives 2:52 5 Lavatory Lil 2:22 6 Deep Deep Feeling 8:25 7 Slidin 3:23 8 The Kiss Of Venus 3:06 9 Seize The Day 3:20 10 Deep Down 5:52 11 Winter Bird / When Winter Comes 3:12 12 Home Tonight (Bonus Track) 3:04 13 In A Hurry (Bonus Track) 4:03

Sparks, brothers Ron and Russell Mael, are back with their 28th album MAD! on May 23rd 2025, their first release with Transgressive Records. It’s far more urgent than that. It’s the sound of now. And now is not history’s brightest moment. Now is full of darkness and sadness and loss for so many. Anxiety, heartache, bewilderment, and despair. But if this album is the sound of lockdown in Dublin’s, it’s not the sound of the clampdown. Far from it. This is an album of resistance, of hope in the darkness. Of beating the clock, squeezing out sparks in the dusty cellars of our despair. Lighting candles with the pennies we’d saved, or stolen, or dreamt of. This is not the sound of the crowd. It’s certainly not the sound of the spirit level on immaculately, generically identikit city streets. This is the sound of the cracks in the concrete, the splinter in the grandfather clock. The flower in the dustbin. The torn page, full of wisdom, trampled underfoot in the rain. The sound of not walking the line. The dance of the dead. But that’s no surprise. The songs of the Trouble Pilgrims have always been haunted. Haunted by ghosts and spirits and spectres. Phantoms, shadows and dead souls. Sometimes their music captures the sound of lonesome streets. Sometimes it transmits the speed and energy of signs and chevrons on the tarmac roads. Gone in the blink of an eye in a trial of taillights and neon. Roads laid by the people with the far away accents, far away dreams too. This is the sound of ghosts on the highway, ghost riders, ghost towns. It is the sound of basements, speeding trains, lonely places, dances, pinball machines. Fights, nights, righteous anarchy. Whoever said that rock ‘n’ roll was a young man’s game had clearly never heard a girl group. And he’d never heard an album like this. This is an album of dust, rust, lust, and distrust. Of decay, shadows, souls in the era of low attention spans and soap box sets. It’s an album that demands to be listened to from start to finish. A piece of work. It’s a long-player. Look it up. It was crafted by five of the most unrelenting spirits of Dublin’s underground music scene. The uncompromising Pilgrims. The last gang on Dub-a-linn town. The boys who never really left the town. And the town never left them. It’s also, importantly, a slab of Do-It-Yourself in a world of bubblegum dreams (and disasters). This is the sound of sleeves rolled up. Sweat, tears, anxiety, ambition. And camaraderie, solidarity, openness, ambition. It is the sound of not compromising. This is dark Dublin rhythm and blues. It’s not Americana. Maybe its Euro-cana? Music for the punishing ever-nights of Scandinavia, the lonesome donna in Venice putting on her faded ball gown for her last dance. This is the sound of the leather jacket hanging in a wardrobe. It could be in Lyon or Limerick or Lisbon. Once the broad shoulders of the local rocker held it aloft like a flag. Then he became a father, then a grandfather. Now he’s a patient. But the songs still matter to him. Even if his heart doesn’t keep up with the steady rhythm of the snare drum. This is the sound of time marching. It is not the sound of standing still. Anything but. This album is an invitation to dance. Some people might wonder why this band of five waited so long to make the album of their lives. Other people will understand why. Delving deep into the melodic and orchestral possibilities of a full array of percussion instruments, from the trap kit to timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, percussion and e-drums, Ty charts the waxing and waning of a love affair, to explore some of the most delicate space we know of – the private emotional location where only two can meet. Love Rudiments is a meditation by Ty Segall on his first love: the drums. Known popularly as a singing guitar player, he generally starts the recording of his songs by laying down a drum track. Love Rudiments kicks off with drums and percussion then adds a few other percussive and production aspects. It travels a great journey in this configuration. However, Love Rudiments wasn’t written or performed to present as some kind of solo drums album – it’s just another music album, with vibes (figurative as well as literal), feels, a theme and a through-line. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Ty’s made an instrumental album of percussive music that rides the wild surf of a waxing-then-waning love affair – from the first blinding look, to the eventual recognition, that look back at love’s rudiments, viewed from beyond and outside that seemingly infinite sensation. And why not? Drums are a melody instrument too. Ty plays them with precision and sensitivity, delving deep into the textures of timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, percussion and e-drums, all of them occupying space within the luxe stereo spread of the drum kit. In the process, a psychological space is opened – a private emotional location where only two can meet. Love Rudiments re embodies the passion and compulsion that drives all of Ty Segall’s music in a suite of moments played on orchestral batterie to explore the most delicate passages of human interaction – playing on the bones of love.
The Smile today announce the details of a new album titled Cutouts, set for release on October 4th via XL Recordings. Perhaps Shaw eyes her reflection here, as has been the case with previous Dry Cleaning records, with Secret Love you can really take your pick from many lyrical non-sequiturs and seemingly random, droll observations to pint your own picture and draw your own conclusions.

While echoes of Wire and Gang of Four will no doubt spring to mind throughout Secret Love, the album and band do something altogether more interesting in that they appear to bridge the gap between the seemingly opposing worlds of progressive music and punk rock. The very English idea of whimsy and outsider concerns, everyday minutiae, runs throughout the album, though it is often paired with a sound palette that, while intricate and considered, is abrasive, sinewy, and web-like, mirroring Shaw’s approach to wordplay and recalling the spirit of awkward British and American bands existent between the prog and punk years, as well as Beefheart, The Red Krayola, The Pop Group, Pere Ubu, Chrome.

While there’s often a melancholy to Shaw’s lyrical focus on the insignificance and discreetness of aspects of the contemporary world, Blood, which introduces a welcome dub-reggae bass groove and scratchy, rhythmic guitars, offers a direct, timely and genuinely affecting depiction of the horrors of war and genocide. Here, the south London four-piece take their place in rock’s avant garde, catalysing the Reaganite paranoia of early 80s US punk and hardcore with the dry strut of Keith Richards, stoner rock, dystopian degradation, playful no wave and pastoral fingerpicking, while Florence’s delivery, meticulously calibrated to her bandmates’ soundscapes, asserts her in a lineage of spoken-word artists stretching from Laurie Anderson to Life Without Buildings’ Sue Tompkins.
The follow-up to Stumpwork started life in Peckham rehearsal spaces, all four members writing, playing and responding to each other in the room: in Dry Cleaning, music and lyrics form an inseparable, generative whole. Secret Love evolved through affirming sessions at Jeff Tweedy’s Chicago studio the Loft and explosive ones with Gilla Band’s Alan Duggan and Daniel Fox at Sonic Studios in Dublin, taking advantage of the sonic particulars of each space, and finally with Cate Le Bon at Black Box in the Loire Valley. After interviewing various potential producers, they picked Cate – an esteemed solo artist who has also made albums for Deerhunter, Devendra Banhart, Wilco and Horsegirl – for her unabashed positivity and openness. “Being in a room with them and hearing that vitality and life force that exists between them all, it’s such a unique expression,” she says.
Trust is Secret Love’s guiding theme, as signified by compulsively catchy ‘Hit My Head All Day’ which opens the album. Powered by pistons of breathy synths and cresting arcs of guitar, Florence’s signature mix of absurdism and sensitivity, “The song is about manipulation of the body and mind. The lyrics were initially inspired by the use of misinformation on social media by the far right. There are powerful people that seek to influence our behaviour for their own gain; to buy certain things, to vote a certain way. I find it hard to read people’s intentions and decide who to trust, even in everyday life. It’s easy to fall under the influence of a sinister stranger who seems like a friend.
We took a playful approach to the song. At one point it had harmonica on it instead of a vocal. leading young double bassists, BlackGate marks Gilmore's emergence as a major new compositional voice, in a style reflective of his expansive collaborations as a performer.
BlackGate is an instrumental composition and genre-fluid journey through myriad evocative sonic spaces, with exquisite writing not just for his own double bass, but for the harp and cello, accompanied by subtle Yamaha DX7 synthesiser passages that provide further sonic depth and colour.
The record encapsulates Gilmore’s idiosyncratic playing style, which has formed the bedrock to his work with artists across a diffuse spectrum of musical styles—from contemporary music to pop, classical and folk—in turn, becoming a manifestation of them all.

Gilmore is a member of Harbour Festival (Cork) in 2019, chatting about ‘genre fluidity’ in music on a panel discussion with curator Mary Hickson.
I ended up doing an impromptu gig alongside William and the musicians he had brought over to the festival to perform his music.
That interaction cemented, and made sense of, how ‘classical’ composers and musicians were also working in genre-fluid ways internationally and this gave assurance to the idea that my musical ideas, amassed performing across genres, had credibility as a notated work also.”

On creating the work, Gilmore explains: ”I was interested in writing a piece that lived somewhere—harmonically and structurally—between indie and minimalist music; using extended string techniques to create a spectral sound world.
At the time I was playing and jumping across a broad range of styles—contemporary music, folk/Irish traditional music, playing in indie groups, and symphonic repertoire with orchestras.
I felt that the playing techniques I was using across these genres were transferable, and the diffuse sonic worlds were conducive with each other–they could live together if it was a reflection of how I approached them, or maybe how I understood them.
It felt most natural to me to write something with this cross pollination of genres in mind.
BlackGate as such became a natural reflection of the different types of music and people I was performing and collaborating with at the time of writing it.”

BlackGate was commissioned by The BlackGate Cultural Centre (Galway) using funds from the Arts Council of Ireland.
The commissioners intention was for It’s another gem in Rhys’ quietly remarkable solo run, and as much as I’d give my right arm for an SFA reunion in 2025, Rhys’ solo career continues to be so consistently rewarding that it hardly feels necessary.

Gruff Rhys – Dim Probs is Out Now on Vinyl & CD

The legendary Gruff Rhys returns with “Dim Probs”, his ninth solo album, fourth Welsh language long player, and first release through Rock Action Records.

Featuring fellow Welsh artists Cate Le Bon and H. Written and performed entirely in Welsh/Cymraeg, Dim Probs places the listener side by side with one of the country’s greatest and most thoughtful songwriters in the corner of a studio as the songs grow around them from just voice and guitar. The result is an intimate and hypnotic record that mixes acoustic folk with whatever scratchy, primitive electronic machines come to hand on each track. One listen?
