Nina Simone saw the light of day in 1959 with “Little Girl Blue”, and the music was never to be the same again. For more than five decades, Nina Simone entertained, delighted and educated her listeners with recordings and performances during her extraordinary career. After a triumphant concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1992, Nina was approached by Elektra A&R manager Michael Alago (who had previously worked for Tracy Chapman and Metallica, among others). When asked if Nina was ready to record again, she replied: “Get me the money…then we can talk!” Following the example of two of Simone’s favorite songs, Frank Sinatra’s “A Man Alone (The Words And Music Of Rod McKuen)” and Billie Holiday’s “Lady In Satin” – with the commonality that both were recorded with full orchestral accompaniment – the recording began.Backed by a 50-piece orchestra, Simone and producer Andre Fischer (Natalie Cole’s then husband and former drummer for the band Rufus) recorded the material that would make up “A Single Woman”.The ten tracks selected at the sessions were a revelation, containing songs about love in a style that only Nina Simone could conceive and realize.Simone recorded further material during the sessions, including covers of Bob Dylan, Prince, the Beatles and Bob Marley, hinting at a possible follow-up album, but sadly “A Single Woman” was to be her last studio album before her death in 2003.“A Single Woman” was reissued in 2006, adding seven of the recordings left behind. Now four more previously unreleased recordings from these sessions have been added to create “A Single Woman”: “The Complete Elektra Recordings” – 21 tracks on CD and double LP.This collection has been remastered and also includes new liner notes by UK Ambassador of Soul, David Nathan, who not only describes the album’s recordings, but also recounts his nearly three-decade relationship with Dr.Simone – beginning with the founding of the UK Nina Simone Appreciation Society in 1965.Experience the last studio recordings of this icon in the most comprehensive way with “A Single Woman: The Complete Elektra Recordings”.
