“Oil on Canvas” is a live album by the British band Japan, originally released in June 1983 by Virgin Records. Despite being promoted as a live recording, the album includes significant studio overdubs and new instrumental tracks, making it a unique mix of live performance and studio production. The album was released after Japan had already disbanded in late 1982. The live recordings were captured during their final tour in 1982, primarily from concerts at Hammersmith Odeon (London) in November 1982. While the performances were recorded live, Sylvian re-recorded some vocals in the studio, and additional production was done to enhance the sound. The album became Japan’s biggest UK chart success, reaching No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart.
