Released through Columbia/Mute on 17 March 2017, Spirit was the last Depeche Mode studio album to feature founding member and keyboardist Andy Fletcher before his passing on 26 May 2022. Spirit pushed Depeche Mode into unexpected new directions, the albums lyrical content directly addressing global societal issues with music hitting its emotional targets with laser precision, the bands personal concerns expressed in universal social commentary, more relevant today than ever. Like previous album releases, Spirit expanded Depeche Modes aesthetic vision and musical repertoire while continuing their tradition of issuing monumental 12 inch singles to supplement and complement their albums. From their earliest days as a band, Depeche Mode have championed 12″ vinyl, embracing the formats singular power and potential for innovation. The 12 inch single allowed the band to explore new sonic possibilities while the tactile real-world beauty of physical packaging gave Depeche Mode room to develop their consistently sophisticated and commanding design aesthetic. Depeche Mode have used their singles discography as a means of offering fans the opportunity to enjoy left field remixes, rare B-sides, standout concert performances and other exclusives.
