J.J. Johnson is regarded as the first musician to succeed in articulating the language of bebop on the trombone.
After participating in Miles Davis’ first Blue Note session in 1952, which resulted in the album “Young Man with a Horn”, producer Alfred Lion enabled the trombonist to make a series of recording sessions under his own name between 1953 and 1955 with other greats of bebop.
These were released in 1956 on the two 12-inch compilations “The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Vol.
1″ and “The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Vol.
2″.
According to AllMusic, the latter contains “some of the best bebop recordings of the time”.
