At the time, much of the attention fell on how this outsider duo would fare under the bright lights- which was fair,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eArmand Hammer\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ehad never done a single producer record before- and here they were working with a living legend. Now, with a little distance, it’s easier to see how\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAlchemist\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003estepped out of his comfort zone to meet them where they were, and how all three artists then absconded for parts unknown. The flashbulb energy of “\u003cem\u003eBring The Stars Out\u003c\/em\u003e”, asymmetric drone of “\u003cem\u003eChicharrones\u003c\/em\u003e”, fugue-bounce of “\u003cem\u003eGod’s Feet\u003c\/em\u003e”, and good luck finding analogues for “Peppertree” or “\u003cem\u003eStonefruit\u003c\/em\u003e”.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eHaram\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003edoesn’t sound like anything else in the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eALC\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ediscography, nor in\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eArmand Hammer\u003c\/strong\u003e’s, for that matter.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eHaram\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewas a one-shot kill that somehow contained some of the most accessible work\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eELUCID\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ebilly woods\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ehad ever done, as well as some of their most experimental, and it all sounded cohesive. Needless to say, they didn’t do this alone; \u003cstrong\u003eKAYANA\u003c\/strong\u003e’s golden voice upps the wattage on “Black Sunlight,” while Fielded’s sultry alto gets chopped and screwed on “\u003cem\u003eAubergine\u003c\/em\u003e”.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eEarl Sweatshirt\u003c\/strong\u003e’s cameo on the sun-soaked “\u003cem\u003eFalling Out the Sky\u003c\/em\u003e” is already a classic.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCurly Castro\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAmani\u003c\/strong\u003e, and\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eQuelle Chris\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eall turn up the heat when called upon. But since we are talking about retrospect here, the thing about\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eHaram\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eisn’t that it still sounds as good as it did when it came out. The amazing thing is that it actually sounds even better than it did then.
