Album of the Week! Robyn - Sexistential

Sexistential is the long-awaited new album from electronic pop icon Robyn and her first full-length release in nearly eight years, following 2018’s HoneyWhile Honey earned widespread acclaim for its intricate, introspective, and more experimental direction, it marked a noticeable step away from the emotionally charged, club-ready immediacy of the Body Talk trilogy. Sexistential, by contrast, feels like a vibrant return to that earlier spirit in a tightly packed, 29-minute rush of some of the most joyful and replayable electronic pop of the decade so far.

The album opens with the kinetic surge of Really Real, setting the tone for a collection that captures Robyn’s singular ability to mix instinct, eccentricity, and pure pop sensibility. The record pulses with energy, danceability, and emotional depth, each track building on the last across its half hour runtime. That momentum carries seamlessly into the sublime lead single Dopamine, an exhilarating electro-pop anthem that flies by in a perfect three-and-a-half minutes. Dopamine, and  the equally brilliant Talk To Me, easily rank right up there with previous triumphs.

Elsewhere, Sexistential continues to play with texture and influence without ever losing sense of its unique identity, something that establishes itself as one of the album’s greatest strengths. Blow My Mind blends Kraftwerk-like rhythms with a sugary, tongue-in-cheek melody reminiscent of Scritti Politti, giving the track a retro-futurist shimmer. Throughout, Robyn dips into various strands of electronic pop, reshaping them in her own image. The penultimate Light Up delivers a shimmering emotional high, echoing the vulnerability and catharsis of her biggest hits, while the title track opts for a playful, self-stylised take on hip-hop, brimming with a Bratty, self-aware energy that feels both current yet distinctly hers.

Robyn’s influence perhaps looms larger than ever over today’s pop landscape, and Sexistential reinforces her role as a pioneer for a generation of boundary-pushing pop artists. Her ability to balance emotional sincerity with dancefloor euphoria remains unmatched. Ahead of the album’s release, Robyn described Sexistential as being less about literal sexuality and more about sensuality, joy, and staying connected to what feels good. That ethos runs through the entire record. It’s a celebration of feeling alive, open, and fully present.

A long-overdue return from a genuine icon and one that more than justifies the wait.
