Layers of Afternoon is meant to reflect a certain experience of time—something both tangible and vague, felt yet not easily described. These moments often emerge in patterns, sometimes brief, sometimes sustained, but always formative. We recognize their uniqueness, yet something subconscious in us yearns to identify and indulge in these patterns. Perhaps we avoid discussing them for fear of sounding mundane or inconsequential, yet they return to our memories often, offering collective comfort. For Keith Kenniff aka Goldmund, language does little to convey these experiences; only art and music seem to come close to capturing what makes them special. Kenniff explains, “My aim for the music in Layers of Afternoon was to find this in-between place and write from there, hoping to communicate my experience of the world as ideal—free from goals, musical training, or emotional complexity. I wanted to visit this space and let the moments float freely within the act of creation.” Working with violinist Scott Moore, Kenniff crafts a sonic landscape that lingers between nostalgia and fleeting presence, allowing listeners to drift through the blurred edges of memory.
Beyond his work as Goldmund, Keith Kenniff is a versatile multi-instrumentalist and composer from Maine. He graduated with honors from Berklee College of Music with a degree in percussion in 2006 and soon after began composing for advertising, film, and television. In 2011, he provided music for Apple’s iPhone 4S ad campaign directed by renowned filmmaker Mark Romanek, leading to high-profile collaborations with Google, Amazon, Instagram, Starbucks, and Facebook—including the iconic Facebook Look Back project and Dove’s Real Beauty Sketches, which became the most-viewed ad of all time, surpassing 200 million views and earning 19 Cannes Lions, including the Titanium Grand Prix in 2014. His compositions have also been featured in numerous HBO series, including The Runaway Bunny, The Number on Great-Grandpa’s Arm, and Song of Parkland, which won a Primetime Emmy in 2018 and 2020. Additionally, Kenniff has composed for acclaimed feature documentaries, such as Blood Brother (Grand Jury Prize at Sundance), the Emmy-nominated Blood Road, and, most recently, the award-winning Emanuel. Since 2004, he has released over 20 albums under the monikers Helios, Goldmund, and Mint Julep.
