Jackson Browne - Montreux Jazz 1982 Jackson Browne
Pickup currently unavailable at Dawson Street
Jackson Browne’s 1977 album, Running On Empty, was a bigger success than any of its predecessors, peaking at number three and launching the hit singles ‘Running On Empty’, and ‘The Load Out/Stay’.
With his career now riding high, Browne began to pursue political and social causes, most notably protesting the use of nuclear energy.
The success of Hold Out, his long awaited 1980 follow-up, was evidence of Browne's rising popularity.
Though the album wasn't as well-crafted as its predecessors, it became his only number one record upon its release.
In the summer of 1982, ‘Somebody's Baby’, from the soundtrack of the movie Fast Times At Ridgemont High, became Browne's biggest hit single, climbing to number seven on the U.S.
charts.
Divided between love songs and political protests, 1983’s Lawyers In Love was another big record, due largely to the success of the singles ‘Lawyers In Love’, ‘Tender Is The Night’, and ‘For A Rocker’.
It was during this era that Jackson Browne performed at the 1982 Montreux Jazz Festival, playing a set at the renowned event on Sunday 18th July - a month or so since he had done likewise at the UK’s Glastonbury Festival.
In the 1970s, the Montreux festival had begun broadening its scope, and included blues, soul, and rock artists, such as Marianne Faithfull, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Deep Purple, Canned Heat and many others from a number of genres.
In 1982, Stevie Ray Vaughan had first come to the world’s attention via his appearance there, and it is still been rumoured that Jackson, Stevie Ray and a number of others played an after-show party at a local night club that year, which continued for eight hours!
