ZAPPAtite – Frank Zappa's Tastiest Tracks brings together a wide selection of Frank Zappa's best-known and best-loved compositions, from his beginnings in psychedelic rock to his avant-garde experimentation, jazz-rock explorations, symphonic suites, and musical satires, compiled into an easy-to-enjoy collection that offers essential gateways to the visionary artist's multiple musical universes.
The album is divided into four parts — Appetizers, Entrees, Second Course, and Desserts — and the food theme permeates the entire design, from the cover, which features Zappa at a diner, to the tracklist presented as a menu, as well as including some of Zappa's favorite foods. The 18 compositions that make up ZAPPAtite were compiled by Zappa's son, Ahmet Zappa, along with Zappa's encyclopedic archivist and "Vaultmeister," Joe Travers.
"This is not a greatest hits album, as Frank didn't really have any hits as such, nor is it a 'best of', because it would be impossible to cram so much genius into a single record," says Ahmet Zappa. "It's a true smorgasbord of musicality for the curious and a buffet of fan favorites. ZAPPAtite brings together a selection of some of my favorite songs composed by my father, leaning more towards the rock side of his extensive repertoire. I hope you're hungry, because this feast for your ears is pure rock."
The album kicks off with the powerful double whammy of "I'm The Slime" and "Dirty Love," from 1973's key Gold-certified album Over-Nite Sensation, quickly introducing Zappa's eclecticism and provocative sense of humor, as the songs fuse polyrhythmic psychedelic rock and heavy funk with their signature lyrics laden with double entendres. From there, the album travels through Zappa's vast musical universe, highlighting fundamental songs and important stages of his career.
The Appetizers section also includes the GRAMMY-nominated® disco satire "Dancin' Fool" and the controversial European hit "Bobby Brown Goes Down," both from the popular 1979 album Sheik Yerbouti; as well as "Trouble Every Day," from the Mothers of Invention's groundbreaking 1966 debut Freak Out!.
Entrees includes one of Zappa's best-known works, the universally beloved instrumental "Peaches En Regalia," from his classic 1969 solo sophomore album Hot Rats; the ubiquitous Top 40 hit "Valley Girl," featuring his then-14-year-old daughter Moon Unit, mimicking typical Valley Girl speech, from the 1982 album Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch; the possible autobiographical piece of a parallel dimension "Joe's Garage", from the 1979 LP of the same name; and the playful blues-rock "Cosmik Debris" along with the humorous "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow", two standout tracks from one of Zappa's most commercial and accessible albums, 1974's Apostrophe (').
Desserts explores Zappa's musical virtuosity and unique live performances, including the comedic "Titties & Beer" from the 1978 live album Zappa In New York; the frenetic "G-Spot Tornado", powered by Synclavier, from the 1986 album Jazz From Hell; the anti-drug critique "Cocaine Decisions" from 1983's The Man From Utopia; and "Zoot Allures," the intense instrumental showcasing some of Zappa's most electrifying guitar performances, from the 1976 album Zoot Allures. The album culminates with a performance of "Strictly Genteel" with the London Symphony Orchestra. This epic piece of orchestral rock originally served as the grand finale to Zappa's surreal 1971 film, 200 Motels.
