By the time Know What I Mean? was recorded (1961), both Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and Bill Evans had left the phenomenally successful Miles Davis Sextet that produced the groundbreaking and iconic album, Kind Of Blue. Evans and Cannonball had first entered the studio together as members of Miles' group on May 26, 1958.
Besides their work with Davis, Evans would participate on three of Cannonball's own albums, Portrait of Cannonball , Jump for Joy and, the release presented here, Know What I Mean? - the last Cannonball Adderley session to feature Bill Evans ' participation.
Cannonball had never recorded any of the tunes from Know What I Mean? before and there is no evidence of him ever having recorded them again. Made up of jazz and popular standards, the programme includes two compositions by Bill Evens - 'Waltz For Debby' and 'Know What I Mean?'.
Includes the bonus track 'Toy' (alternate take) from the same sessions but not included on the original LP.
"What's better than a Bill Evans Trio album? How about a Bill Evans trio album on which the bassist is Percy Heath, the drummer is Conny Kay, and the leader is not Evans but alto sax god Cannonball Adderley, making the group actually a quartet? It's a different sort of ensemble, to be sure, and the musical results are marvellous. It's hard to imagine any fan of mainstream jazz not finding much to love on this very fine recording" - **** Rick Anderson, AllMusic Guide
