"I miss Conway. We all miss Conway. We miss him a lot. Things are not the same without him." Nick Cave
Conway Savage - Too Dark To See: Solo & Collaborative Recordings 1992–2010
Conway Savage remains one of the most singular figures in Australian music. A pianist, songwriter and vocalist whose presence in Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds from 1990 to 2017 helped define the emotional and sonic language of the band across three decades. Born in country Victoria and shaped by the lived-in textures of pubs, regional life and late-night performance, Savage brought a distinctly human, ragged lyricism to everything he touched. Nick Cave would later describe him as “the anarchic thread that ran through the band’s live performances,” while the Bad Seeds’ collective tribute captured the breadth of his character: “irascible, funny, terrifying, sentimental, warm-hearted… honest, genuine… [with] the gift of a golden voice, high and sweet and drenched in soul.” In both his collaborative work and solo recordings, Savage stood apart as an artist who balanced fragility and defiance, and an unmistakable voice in Australia’s cultural landscape.
The forthcoming Conway Savage Too Dark To See anthology gathers together recordings that trace this remarkable arc: from the intimate and elegiac to the wry, unguarded and quietly transcendent. From 1993 onwards Savage released acclaimed solo work that privileged atmosphere, storytelling and emotional truth over polish, and exhibited a lo-fi haunted quality, with sparse songs echoing with country, blues and folk.
This first-ever anthology of his music, named after his song ‘Too Dark To See’ from his 1993 debut EP, collects together 24 tracks, including many rarities. Early selections such as ‘Fair and Tender Ladies,’ ‘1000 Days’ and ‘You Did As You Were Told To Do’ show his gift for reinterpreting folk tradition through a distinctly Antipodean lens, while songs like ‘Trail of Broken Hearts’ and ‘I Trust You Had a Good Time’ introduce the bittersweet, observational writing that would become a hallmark of his solo work.
Tracks such as ‘The Cross, Old Soul With A New Hole’, ‘Tanist and These Are The Waves’, capture Savage at his most expansive, moving between spiritual reflection and sardonic wit, often anchored by piano-led arrangements that mirror his Bad Seeds contributions.
The latter half of the anthology deepens this portrait, drawing on material that reveals Savage’s enduring preoccupation with mortality, memory and fleeting connection. ‘Nothing Broken’, ‘Only Ghosts’ and ‘Just One of Those Things’ echo the title of his 2000 debut album while reaffirming his fascination with impermanence and resilience, themes that resonate even more poignantly in retrospect. The closing run of tracks - from ‘Saint Of Shitty Little Rooms’ through to ‘Crumbling World and Tonight’- offers a final, unvarnished statement: songs that feel lived-in, humane and unsentimental, yet quietly devastating in their emotional clarity.
The anthology is not simply a retrospective but a carefully assembled narrative. It's one that honours Conway Savage not only as a member of The Bad Seeds, but as a deeply influential songwriter whose work continues to ripple through Australia’s musical and cultural identity.
It came about as a result of fellow former Bad Seed and Conway collaborator Mick Harvey approaching Impressed Recordings on behalf of Conway’s family, enquiring if the label would be interested in creating a record that would honour Conway’s legacy. It's an honour to be able to do so.
Pressed on heavyweight double lilac vinyl, and with this first pressing limited to only 200 copies, each numbered with Impressed's signature obi strip, it's beautifully packaged anthology for Conway's many admirers and Bad Seeds collectors.
It co-incides with gigs held in Melbourne to celebrate his legacy - and is available to pre-order now for a July 17th 2026 release.
