Culled from sessions recorded live in France and at a New York studio in 1962, Dizzy on the French Riviera marked Dizzy Gillespie's first incursion into the realm of Bossa Nova (he had already been a pioneering force in the development of Latin jazz). The album features backing by small groups ranging from quintets to septets, and boasts such stars as pianist Lalo Schifrin (who arranged all of the music here), and saxophonist Charlie Ventura.
Contains new specially prepared liner notes by Penguin Guide to Jazz’s writer BRIAN MORTON and by Paris’ prestigious JAZZ MAGAZINE.
Originally released as Dizzy on the French Riviera (Phillips PHS600048)
“Caught in the act at the third International Jazz Festival at Juan-les-Pins on the French Riviera, Gillespie and company were in fine fettle. Much of the credit for this generally fine set goes to French Gypsy guitarist Bacsik (a cousin of the late Django Reinhardt)” (John A. Tynan)

A2-A4, B1, B3 & B5: Same personnel as above except Bacsik and Riestra omitted, and Charlie Ventura (ts, bass sax) & José Paula (g, tamb, perc, vcl) added. New York, May 1962.
