CD reissue of the 1991 collaboration with Miles Davis and Michel Legrand for Miles’ Centennial.
Few albums carry the weight of finality as gracefully as Dingo: Selections from the Motion Picture Soundtrack. Composed entirely by the legendary French maestro Michel Legrand for Rolf De Heer's 1991 Australian film, this soundtrack reunited two giants who had last collaborated on the celebrated Legrand Jazz album back in 1958. Miles Davis — who also took on his first and only major screen role in the film, playing a fictional jazz trumpeter named Billy Cross — brought his unmistakable voice to a score that spans hard-bop swing, lush orchestral balladry, and funk-inflected groove. The result is a record of rare emotional depth, shaped by the combined lyricism of two masters at the height of their craft.
The music moves fluidly between idioms: Concert on the Runway swings with a hard-bop rhythmic stamp reminiscent of Davis's late-1950s work, while The Dream and Trumpet Cleaning showcase the tender, introspective side of his playing. The Jam Session — the climactic set piece of the film — pulses with funky energy, nodding to Davis's electric period. Notably, trumpeter Chuck Findley handles several cues depicting the younger, less seasoned protagonist, while Davis himself embodies the mythic jazz legend Cross. The sessions brought together Davis's then-current band alongside a large ensemble of Los Angeles session luminaries, recorded at Chrystal Studios and mixed at Hendon Studios in Adelaide, Australia.
Dingo remains one of the most unjustly overlooked soundtracks of the late 20th century — and this Rhino reissue finally gives it the vinyl platform it deserves.
