After a long silence, Puzzle Muteson reappears somewhere else. Mechanical Kiss is not quite a return, not quite a continuation. It is a one-off collaborative record made in a different climate, under a different voltage: the eerie coastal light of the Isle of Wight displaced by Bangkok’s concrete heat, raw air, sleepless movement and dense nocturnal rhythm.

Puzzle's vocals were written and recorded there, away from the familiar weather of Ryde. What had once seemed tied to salt, hills, birds, rust, horses and trembling guitar now found itself surrounded by traffic haze, humid rooms, hard surfaces, low frequencies and the strange tenderness of distance.

Thick beats, submerged basslines and dark electronic textures became a kind of hidden architecture; not a backdrop, but a pressure system. The voice moving through it as if half-awake, caught between instinct and confession, finding words in the machinery before the machinery had settled.

There is something immediate about Mechanical Kiss, but also something buried. It carries the feeling of recordings made under low light, in a room where no one is sure whether the door is locked or open. The songs seem to have passed through the body rather than the desk: sung into corners, whispered against circuitry, pressed into shape by repetition and accident.

The record moves in a different lane from his previous recordings En Garde, Theatrics and Swum. The voice is still exposed. The writing is still wounded, oddly tender. Yet here the fragility is held inside a harder shell. The tremble has been placed against pulse, abrasion and shadow.

On “Above The Stage”, another voice enters the room, not as ornament but as a second temperature. The song opens a brief chamber inside the record: suspended, ghosted, close enough to touch and still somehow out of reach.

Mechanical Kiss is a record of displacement, instinct and contact. A meeting of fractured song and dense electronic weather. A set of transmissions from an unfamiliar city, written fast, felt first, and left with enough darkness around it to keep breathing
